Love at first sight named Falkor

February 10, 2018 – The desire to change our lives, a movie that moved us and a passion for travel that has rekindled (or perhaps just simply revived). These are the three pillars that push us to try our adventure. An equally important element, however, is what our home will be: Falkor. This is a very special camper, bought used, almost by chance, last year. He is an Hymer Exsis SG first series, named as the dragon of fortune from the movie “The Neverending Story” due to its particular shape. When we first saw it, it reminded us of a beluga, but then that curious shape of the roof brought to mind the thick hair of the co-star of Wolfgang Petersen’s film, always pulled back by the wind when the dragon flies.

Falkor is fundamental in our project not only because after much reflection he is the chosen one to take the place of the 65 square meters of our house, but also because it is thanks to him that we have reconnected with nomadic life. I (Paolo) became a motorhome owner in 1991, a few months after my daughter Mara was born: appreciating traveling trips, I appreciated the advantages of bringing my house with me with a small child. Since then, I have had five different motorhomes. I started with what we called “the camper of Barbie” (a van on Volkswagen T4 with a popup roof set up by the Italian CamperTre), passed from classic coahbuilt up to over 7 meters in length (CI Mizar 130, CI Mizar 190 and Arca 720 GLM) and finished with a rare BavariaCamp Sol y Sombra van.

After the separation from my wife, mainly for economic reasons, I sold the camper and switched to a caravan (Hobby 440 DeLuxe SB), a very rewarding experience of a couple of years, but the opening of our bar, in 2015, put an end to the dreams of traveling holidays: only one day off per week and 15 days off in August were not compatible with a caravan. In order not to keep it forever in storage, with related expenses, we invested some money in a used tent trailer, which we used for the holidays of only one summer. Then the unexpected: our car, a Citroen C4 with 170,000 kilometers on its wheels, left us on foot twice in the space of three months. And so it was natural to start looking for an alternative.

But during the search, here is the second unexpected: the outline of the little Hymer appeared from the ads. So, almost for fun, we said to ourselves: “Let’s go and see it”. And it was love at first sight. In a future post we will explain better why.
